History

This is your Vyborg

Sometimes history can be changed by contemporaries. Who wants to understand the past, when the troubles of present do not allow to think about the future? Occasionally, news of disasters and tragedies can distract us from the restless of our lives. After catastrophes we are shocked and devastated: «How could it happen?».

With a childish grudge, we try to understand the reasons. Who is to blame? Who allowed this? But after a couple of days everything’s back to normal.

Cities live longer than people. We are sure that during all 725 years of its existence, Vyborg has witnessed private dramas many times. It saw how Moscow warriors were running from the explosion in one of the fortresses in cold day of November 1495. It saw who was the first visitor in the new building of the Vyborg market which was built in 1905. It saw what happened to the Finnish soldiers marching past the Round tower who were captured in the photo from 1941. What are you thinking about when you stand at the Vyborg railway station in 2018.

Right now Vyborg is trying to withstand the most serious siege of its life. Now it’s obvious that there’s no need in ladders, arquebus or howitzer to take this city. The ordinary indifference of citizens is more dangerous than any weapons. The great history of the city becomes a dust. And if you look closely at your palms, you will see it.

Sadly and slowly, without attracting attention to their little provincial tragedy, the city is frayed, crumbling and crumbling. Lost facades are hung with construction mesh, collapsed walls are closed with blocks of fences, the original parts are replaced with modern materials, without preserving the identity. This, unfortunately, is what distinguishes the city from any cozy European town, and this is what we want to talk about.

Logotype

Vyborg became a city 110 years after the construction of the castle. 170 years later there was build the Horned fortress. 130 years later it became a part of Russia. And after 308 years, Vyborg is characterized by a single lack of unity. The new logotype follows the well known forms and outlines that the city has acquired for centuries. The sign emphasizes the importance of the city’s history. In symbol you can also see friendly hugs that welcome all people who live or visit Vyborg today.

Disappearance

Sadly and slowly, without attracting attention to their little provincial tragedy, the city is frayed, crumbling and crumbling. Lost facades are hung with construction mesh, collapsed walls are closed with blocks of fences, the original parts are replaced with modern materials, without preserving the identity. This, unfortunately, is what distinguishes the city from any cozy European town, and this is what we want to talk about.

In this concept there is no pretentious novelty, only the outlines and native colors of the city. This is the way from ascetic simplicity to details, from black and white eternity to bright and colorful references of the digital era. Contour lines symbolize the continuous connection of times and generations — they will remain, even if the buildings disappear completely. Colored blocks are echoed without excessive moralism — right now each of them can hide architectural detail, and maybe emptiness.

Kinesthetization

But how to make the words “This is your Vyborg” more than a good slogan? How to find a response in the hearts of locals and tourists? How to move from the intangibility to the reality?
Kinesthetization. This approach allows everyone to create a unique handmade postcard, paint the cover of the notebook with a marker,
paint a t-shirt, etc.! That’s how the idea of do-it-yourself  souvenir production was born — tvoy.vyborg.me
